C64: Fort Apocalypse

The fact that one of the best computer games in my opinion is over 40 years old shows more than clearly that good gameplay is still more important than HD graphics. The game I’m talking about here is Fort Apocalypse.

Fort Apocalypse, developed and published by Synapse Software in 1982, is an action game with helicopter shooter elements. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which the player, as the pilot of a helicopter, must free the captured hostages and destroy the reactor and thus the fortress. The caves of this fortress are occupied by the enemy army and surrounded by dense defenses, making the mission extremely difficult. The game offered very detailed graphics for the time (and hardware) and fast, exciting gameplay that was right on the border between challenging and hard. The player had to fly through different sections of the fortress to take out enemies, find switches to open doors and free hostages. The soundtrack was created by none other than the famous composer and musician Rob Hubbard, who was known for his groundbreaking work in the field of computer music.

Fort Apocalypse was a huge success and delighted players all over the world. The game quickly became a classic and is still considered by many to be one of the best games on the C64. It was also ported to other platforms such as the Apple II and the Atari XL/XE.

Overall, Fort Apocalypse was a milestone in the world of computer games and an outstanding example of the innovative and exciting games that were released on the C64 in the 80s. The game was an important contribution to the development of computer games and will always have a special place in the hearts of many gamers, including myself.

A few years ago I went to the trouble of creating a map of the two levels from screenshots in Photoshop. It took several playthroughs to take the 150 or so screenshots and several hours to put them together in PS.
