35 years of survival in the shadows
Since its release in 1989, „Shadowrun“ has captivated role-playing game fans worldwide. The unique blend of cyberpunk, magic and a dark vision of the future has made this game a cult classic.
In 2024, we will be celebrating the 35th anniversary of this groundbreaking role-playing game. This occasion offers the perfect opportunity to take an in-depth look at the fascinating world of Shadowrun, its complex game mechanics, the various editions and its presence in other media.
The 35th anniversary of Shadowrun is not only a reason to celebrate, but also an opportunity to recognize the game’s profound influence on the world of role-playing games and pop culture as a whole.

The world of Shadowrun
„Shadowrun“ is set in a dystopian future that combines elements of cyberpunk and urban fantasy. The plot is set in the 2050s to 2080s, in a world where global mega-corporations have taken over and rule people’s lives. The society is deeply divided, with a clear divide between the wealthy and the impoverished.
– Story and Setting:
In the world of Shadowrun, the year 2011 marked the beginning of a new era when the so-called „Awakening“ happened – a sudden re-emergence of magical powers that changed the world forever. Humans mutated into metahumans, including elves, dwarves, orcs and trolls. Dragons awoke from their slumber and occupied important positions in society. Magical beings and ancient creatures reappeared, which led to a dramatic change in the global order.
– Politics and business:
The world is dominated by powerful mega-corporations that have more power than national governments. These corporations often wage secret wars for resources and influence, hiring shadowrunners – independent mercenaries – for dangerous and illegal missions.
In the shadows of the cities, different factions fight for supremacy, and the balance between technological and magical forces is fragile.
– Technology and magic:
Increased advancements in technology have given rise to cyberware implants, powerful AI systems and the virtual reality of the Matrix. Simultaneously, the return of magic has led to new opportunities and threats. Magicians, shamans and other magically gifted individuals use ancient powers to achieve their goals.
This fusion of technology and magic creates a unique, dangerous world full of possibilities and dangers.
The Gameplay
The gameplay of „Shadowrun“ is known for its complexity and depth. The players take on the role of „Shadowrunners“, mercenaries who work for the highest bidders and carry out dangerous missions. The spectrum ranges from data acquisition and industrial espionage to contract killings („wetwork“).
Thanks to advances in technology and science, they have a variety of technical and magical resources at their disposal to survive these missions.
– Character creation and development:
„Shadowrun“ is a role-playing game with no fixed levels or classes, allowing players to customize their characters through attributes, skills, magic and implants. In addition to humans, players can also choose elves, dwarves, orcs and trolls, with supplementary volumes also introducing more exotic creatures such as centaurs. The game offers „archetypes“ as guides for character creation to make it easier for beginners to get started. There is also the option to create diverse character combinations such as cybernetic samurai orcs, magical elf reporters or feline hybrid mercs.
– Dice system:
The game system is based on a combination of attributes and skills, which are determined by dice rolls based on six-sided dice (D6). A typical action requires the roll of a number of dice depending on the combination of attribute and skill. Each roll that exceeds a certain threshold counts as a success. The number of successes determines the result of the action. The system allows players to develop their characters through experience points and learn new skills.
– Strategy and teamwork:
Teamwork and strategic thinking are crucial for being successful. The players must use their different skills and equipment to plan and execute complex missions. Combat, hacking and magical rituals all require their own unique approach and tactics. The game master plays a central role by presenting the world and its challenges and moderating the players‘ actions.
