In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only WAR !
I find the Warhammer 40K universe very interesting, especially all the 40K lore. I’ve played W40K a few times at conventions. I like the tabletop game itself and had fun playing it.
What bothers me is mainly the miniature painting. Also, I find the whole turn-based system not optimal. Often, the player who goes first can put their opponent under extreme pressure, and they can (almost) do nothing about it. Other systems are better nowadays (One Page Rule, SW Legion, X-Wing, etc.).
While reading all the lore and watching games on YouTube, I had the following thought:
Which faction would actually suit me?
On one hand, the lore/codex needs to fit me, such as:
The freaks, the outlaws, the bad guys (in W40K LOL), the others…
On the other hand, the faction also needs to fit my playstyle, meaning:
Offensive/aggressive, shock trooper, blitzkrieg, more tactical/reactive, less strategic/planning…
With this in mind, I looked at the factions/races in Warhammer 40K to see which might suit me:
- Out of principle, these are not for me. …
- The Imperium of Man
Including Space Marines, Adeptus Mechanicus, Sisters of Battle, Astra Militarum, Custodes, etc.
A totalitarian, progress-hostile, racist theocracy.
One wrong breath and you’re a heretic and threatened with extermination – No thanks!
Even if the mainstream and GW love and worship the God Emperor. - The Leagues of Votann
Dwarves in space? No thanks!
Too close to the Imperium of Man. - The Tau Empire
Focus on long-range weapons sounds interesting at first.
But Communists in space. Strict caste system, all for the Greater Good. No thanks!
- The Imperium of Man
- Neither lore nor gameplay appeals to me or fits me…
- Craftworlds Eldar
Snobbish, arrogant space-elves in their ivory tower, ah, ivory spaceship. - The Ynnari
Snobbish, arrogant space-elves on dinosaurs and without modern technology. - Genestealer
The lore suggests they were once their own race and then eventually became a sub-race of the Tyranids. They make more sense in the lore and gameplay of Space Hulk and Kill Team than in regular W40K. - The Necrons
Far too OP for me, both in gameplay and lore. So extremely OP that they’re no fun – a snap of the fingers and they would rule the galaxy.
On the other hand, the history/lore of the Necrons is very interesting, maybe GW should release a War in Heaven edition, like they did with the Horus Heresy (30K).
- Craftworlds Eldar
- Interesting lore, but the gameplay doesn’t suit me…
- The Forces of Chaos
Good lore, especially Slaanesh and Khorne.
But gameplay-wise, they are nothing special.
They are like the Imperium of Man but in pink, red, green, or blue.
And they have too much to do with Warp, Psykers, buffs, etc.
- The Forces of Chaos
- The gameplay suits me, but the lore does not…
- The Tyranids
The poster boys for Zerg rush (literally), war of attrition, shock troopers,
so actually exactly the kind of gameplay I like.
But the lore is the problem for me, or rather the lack of it.
No heroes, no story, no real motivation, etc.
Also, they are far too OP, both in gameplay and lore.
So extremely OP that they’re no fun.
- The Tyranids
After all the factions that don’t work for me for various reasons, there are still two factions that might suit me:
- If it had to be one of these two…
- The Drukhari
But not the Haemonculi or Kabal, but the Wych Cult of the Drukhari.
Sadistic, crazy, arrogant, almost exclusively female space-elves!
Fast, offensive close combat and also looking good.
Lethal, deadly, and beautiful. - The Orks
Savage, crazy, and battle-hungry plus weapons, armor, vehicles, and „equipment“ that would make Mad Max’s Road Warrior jealous.
No discussions with strategic political mumbo-jumbo:
Might makes right! – It’s that simple!
Focus on offensive close combat. Quickly get into the action and smash everything!
The only „strategy“: keep hitting the opponent until they stop moving – at least.
Apart from the looks, I like the Orks a bit more than the Drukhari.
- The Drukhari
Conclusion:
If I ever play Warhammer 40K, Necromunda/Kill Team, OPR Grimdark, or OPR Grimdark Firefight, then probably with the Orks.
Unfortunately, there’s still the problem of painting the models. I don’t have the time or the ultra-fine motor skills for that. But it was still interesting to think about the different Warhammer 40K factions. In that sense…
WAAAGH!
